Employment Opportunities exist in public safety telecommunications field with a variety of employers. Examples include the following:

  • local government emergency communication centers
  • county sheriff’s offices, local law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies, emergency management
  • related emergency dispatch operations

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Describe the concepts and theories related to public safety communication systems, including GIS/GPS, 911 communication networks, and mental health awareness.
  • Identify the applicable best practices in business, public and interpersonal relations, local government finance systems, personal management and supervision, project coordination, and grant writing.

This program is a dual enrollment online program with an onsite work-based learning component. The 911 Communication and Operations curriculum is designed to provide new students, as well as current practitioners, with knowledge and skills in the areas necessary for entrance or advancement within emergency communications. Coursework includes concepts and skills in telecommunication systems, basic software and GIS/GPS, communications, documentation, public administration, personnel management and supervision, grant writing, professional ethics, cultural awareness, mental health awareness, and adaptation to technology within emergency communication organizations.

*Students will take General Education courses through Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute while also completing the program core courses through Richmond Community College (RCC). Upon meeting RCC requirements, students will then graduate with an Associate in Applied Science degree (A55470)
