Associate in Science

The Associate in Science degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Associate in Science program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate Scientific Literacy. Apply scientific principles and methods to analyze natural phenomena, solve problems, and evaluate claims based on empirical evidence.
  2. Utilize Quantitative Reasoning. Interpret and analyze quantitative data using appropriate mathematical tools, including algebra, statistics, and calculus, to support scientific and technical decision-making.
  3. Communicate Effectively in Scientific Contexts. Present scientific information and arguments clearly and logically in both written and oral formats, using discipline-appropriate language and documentation styles.
  4. Apply Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills. Identify, evaluate, and solve problems using logical reasoning, experimental design, and evidence-based approaches across scientific disciplines.
  5. Demonstrate Competency in Laboratory and Technical Skills. Safely and effectively use laboratory equipment, technology, and procedures to collect, analyze, and interpret scientific data.

Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use. The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA) enables North Carolina community college graduates of two-year associate in science programs who are admitted to constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina and to Signatory Institutions of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities to transfer with junior status.

Community college graduates must obtain a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer with a junior status. Courses may also transfer through bilateral agreements between institutions.

The mission of the Associate in Science program at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute is to cultivate students’ ability to think critically, to communicate effectively, and to transfer the A.S. degree successfully to a four-year university.

A.S. Program Intent Statement

The intent of the A.S. program is for students to be prepared for the rigors of university level work, experience cultural opportunities, and be able to successfully transfer to a 4-year institution with Junior status.
