When someone mentions poetry, what adjectives come to mind? Poetry can sometimes be opaque and daunting. Negative connotations of poetry may stifle the inner poet, an unfortunate occurrence which may dissuade the potential poetic person to pause and part ways with a yet unrecognized and untapped power. Our creative writing class will focus on enhancing your inner poet. We will practice the wonderful art of poetry, harnessing the immense power of the English language.

Our topics will include:

Finding ideas to write poetry;

Applying literary devices, such as metaphor, simile, alliteration, and allusion;

Writing different types of poetry (lyric, narrative);

Using different rhyme schemes, such as end rhyme, internal rhyme, imperfect rhyme, and free verse;

And other ways to refine your creation of poetry.

So, come to class prepared to have fun, be challenged by the English language, and place poetry on the page!

  • Students should bring their own spiral notebook and pens or pencils.
  • No material fees
  • Instructor fee based on MA degree in English.
