Associate in Arts

The Associate in Arts degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Associate in Arts program, students will be able to:

  1. Communicate Effectively. Demonstrate clear and coherent written, oral, and visual communication appropriate to academic and professional contexts.
  2. Apply Critical Thinking and Analysis. Analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information, arguments, and texts from multiple disciplines to make reasoned judgements and solve problems.
  3. Demonstrate Cultural and Global Awareness. Identify and evaluate different cultural perspectives, values, and contributions in historical and contemporary contexts.
  4. Utilize Quantitative and Scientific Reasoning. Apply basic mathematical and scientific concepts and methods to interpret data, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
  5. Interpret and Analyze Creative Works. Evaluate and interpret artistic, literary, and philosophical works using relevant terminology and critical approaches.

Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use. The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA) enables North Carolina community college graduates of two-year associate in arts programs who are admitted to constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina and to Signatory Institutions of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities to transfer with junior status.

Community college graduates must obtain a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer with a junior status. Courses may also transfer through bilateral agreements between institutions.

A.A. Program Intent Statement

The intent of the A.A. program is for students to be prepared for the rigors of university level work, experience cultural opportunities, and be able to transfer successfully to a 4-year institution with Junior status.
