The class/lab component includes the proper selection of venipuncture sites, the correct order of draw, the use and care of collection tubes, the proper collection of blood specimens, data entry, communication skills, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping. Students perform both capillary collections and venipunctures on each other; the student will stick and be stuck during class lab. Upon successful completion of class/lab the student is assigned to attend a clinical site where the student will demonstrate previously learned knowledge and skills, including proper procedures for venipuncture collections. Upon successful completion of class/lab and clinical the student will receive a certificate and be prepared to sit for the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) national certification examination.

Please read this information packet prior to registering for this class. It includes instructions for registration and documentation that you will turn in to your instructor on the first night of class.

- First and Last name on card must match government issued PHOTO ID.
- Cannot be laminated
- Government issued PHOTO ID (Driver’s License)
- First and Last name on ID must match name on social security card.
- Must be valid and cannot expire before the end of class
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Immunization/Health Record Form
- Provided during orientation
- Must be completed and signed, or stamped, by student’s health care provider or health department.
- Must have the following immunizations documented:
- Tetanus Booster within past 10 years OR record of Tdap
- Varicella (chickenpox) (2 shots or titer =/>1.09
- Measles, mumps, rubella – MMR (2 shots or + titer)
- Hepatitis B – (3 shots OR Positive Hepatitis B titer OR Declination)
- Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) – current, negative
- Flu Vaccination (in season)
- If required by the clinical site, please read the Covid Vaccine Clinical Acknowledgement in the Information Packet prior to registration.
*For questions regarding immunizations, student should contact their healthcare provider recommendation of need, based upon age, health concerns and current CDC guidelines. If there are special considerations, the provider must document the need on letterhead or office stamp for validation.

- Will classmates draw blood from each other?
- Yes, students must interact with classmates by drawing blood specimens from each other.
- Is there a state or national examination?
- Yes. Students who successfully complete the phlebotomy class/lab/clinical are eligible to apply to sit for the American Society of Phlebotomists (ASPT) exam for national certification. Although, completers are not required to have national certification in order to practice as a phlebotomist in North Carolina; many facilities require certification for employment.
