The Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook states, “Employment of mechanical engineering technicians is projected to grow 2 percent from 2014 to 2024, slower than the average for all occupations. Nevertheless, there should be opportunities for those who can master new software and technology, as well as traditional manual skills.” (Visited 2016).

Learning Outcomes

Once students have completed the coursework in this program, they should be able to

  1. Apply basic engineering principles and technical skills to develop and troubleshoot mechanical systems.
  2. Successfully design and/or alter a drawing in a computer-aided drafting (CAD) program and render the design into a three-dimensional (3D) print.
  3. Identify the various array of available manufacturing materials and the finishing processes used in industry.
  4. Comprehend the effects of statics in the design, construction, and longevity of materials.
  5. Recognize the advantages and disadvantages of additive manufacturing versus subtractive manufacturing.
