Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute was named a 2024 grant recipient by Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation®, receiving $38,604 to increase lifesaving capabilities in Caldwell and Watauga counties. The grant was used to purchase 18 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for the college’s two campuses, as well as the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center, to ensure the community is better prepared for emergencies.
“We are grateful to the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and our local Firehouse Subs in Lenoir for awarding us this grant,” CCC&TI President Dr. Mark Poarch said. “The new AEDs will fulfill a critical need by improving overall safety and our ability to respond to health emergencies on our campuses.”
The AEDs were placed in buildings and high-traffic areas on both campuses in Hudson and Boone, and on site at the college’s J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir. The equipment provides easy, step-by-step instructions on how to use the defibrillators in the event of a cardiac emergency. The machines are self-contained, automated and easy to use regardless of experience or training, allowing those nearby to respond quickly in the event of a medical emergency.
