The Foundation of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute has awarded the 2024 Harold F. Coffey Scholarship to West Caldwell High School graduate Carson McMasters.
The scholarship, which was established in 2020 by the Coffey Foundation, is merit-based and provides $2,500 annually to a graduate of Caldwell County Schools or a graduate of a certified Caldwell County home school who does not qualify for a Pell Grant. The graduate must also have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and have demonstrated civic or community involvement. The scholarship provides funds to cover the cost of tuition, books, and supplies for a student who plans to enroll in either an Associate in Science or Associate in Applied Science program of study at CCC&TI.
McMasters, who is a Caldwell County native, is currently working toward an Associate in Applied Science Degree in CCC&TI’s Physical Therapist Assistant program. “My plan is to continue working hard in my program in order to help others in the future,” said McMasters.
As a student at West Caldwell High School, McMasters excelled academically and was involved with several clubs and civic organizations including Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Ambassadors, Interact Club and Mu Alpha Theta Honors Club. He was also an accomplished athlete, competing on the WCHS golf, basketball and cross-country teams.
McMasters also achieved Perfect Attendance throughout his 13 years in public school in Caldwell County, served as a Junior Marshal and was a member of the National Technical Education Honor Society. McMasters also worked throughout high school at a local golf course while also earning academic honors as a Career and College Promise Student, making high grades in his college courses while still attending high school.
McMasters says that this scholarship is an honor and a significant financial help to his family. “This scholarship means a lot to my family and I as it took a huge financial weight off of our shoulders so that I can now solely focus on my schooling,” he said. “I am the youngest of three children. My parents assisted my sisters with their college expenses, so this scholarship is a help to them. I am truly thankful for this scholarship and the opportunity CCC&TI has given me.”
